Justice in Moral Reasoning

Justice: A Journey in Moral Reasoning, Michael J. Sandel
Hundreds of students pack Harvard's Sanders Theater for Michael Sandel's "Justice" course—an introduction to moral and political philosophy. They come to hear Sandel lecture about great philosophers of the past—from Aristotle to John Stuart Mill—but also to debate contemporary issues that raise philosophical questions—about individual rights and the claims of community, equality and inequality, morality and law.

Despite the size of the course, Sandel engages students in lively discussion on topics including affirmative action, income distribution, and same-sex marriage, showing that even the most hotly contested issues of the day can be the subject of reasoned moral argument. This film, which contains excerpts of several classes, is part of a project to make this legendary course an educational resource that reaches beyond the Harvard classroom.

Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippett

Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippett: religion, meaning, ethics, and ideas [from American Public Media]
A profound stutter as a child left Alan Rabinowitz virtually unable to communicate and to prefer animals to people. He became a wildlife biologist and made his name as an explorer in some of the world's last wild places — discovering new animal species, encountering human communities believed to be lost, and most of all working for the survival of the world's endangered big cats — lions, jaguars, tigers. We hear about his extraordinary insights into the animal-human bond; and also about the dramatic personal odyssey that has brought him across the years to rediscover "the human side of things" — both in life, and in the evolving science of wildlife conservation. » Visit the Web site.

Right to die

BBC News - Locked-in man seeks right to die
A man with "locked-in syndrome" has begun legal action, asking the director of public prosecutions to clarify the law on so-called mercy killing.

Tony Nicklinson, 56, wants his wife to be allowed to help him die without the risk of being prosecuted for murder.

Mr Nicklinson, of Melksham, Wiltshire, communicates by blinking or nodding his head at letters on a board.

His lawyers say he is "fed up with life" and does not wish to spend the next 20 years in this condition.

Acknowledging that wickedness exists doesn’t mean you have to believe in the existence of Satan. And you don’t have to be religious to think that there is such a thing as sin – just think of Jamie Bulger, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.

Bottled Water

Daily Kos: Drinking Bottled Water Still? Watch this Video
The sheer inanity of drinking bottled water has been diaried here ad nauseam by myself and several other posters. Unless one happens to have a real need for bottled water (emergencies, choked pipes, disasters et cetera) there's absolutely no reason why tap water can't be filled & refilled into water eco-containers when you are on the move. Your tap water tastes horrible? Water filters and reverse osmosis filters are coming down in price and available in most hardware stores and many online shops.

Fingerprints of God

Searching For The 'Fingerprints Of God' : NPR
n her new book, Fingerprints of God, NPR religion correspondent Barbara Bradley Hagerty investigates the intersection of science and faith. She researched everything from the brain functions of Buddhist monks, to the effectiveness of prayer to heal the sick.

She says that after talking countless scientists, she found that science cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, but that science is "entirely consistent" with God.

Jesus Christ

Who is the real Jesus? Facts about Jesus Christ
Who was the real Jesus?
Do recently discovered ancient manuscripts reveal a different Jesus? Or…does the evidence reveal that the Jesus of the New Testament is the real Jesus?
Scholars examine the facts:

Who was---or is Jesus Christ? Ancient manuscripts tell us that Jesus was born around 4 BC and died AD 30. Although he never wrote a book or held a position of political power, Jesus’ life has influenced our planet more than that of any king, president, philosopher or other religious leader.

Written accounts from his followers tell us that Jesus bodily rose from the grave three days after his brutal execution on a Roman cross and burial. Yet TV documentaries, movies, and books like The Da Vinci Code have attacked the New Testament record of Jesus Christ, claiming it is unreliable; others claim Jesus is a myth.

Archaeologists, historians, textual critics, and paleographers have discovered a wealth of evidence that sheds light on this unique person in the history of our world. So what do the facts tell us? Can we trust the New Testament accounts of Jesus, or are the skeptics right?

The Future Of Humankind

Before you listen to the following presentations, I would have you know that they are controversial.  You may or may not agree with them because you have your own belief system. The old saying applies, " It is not wrong to disagree, but is not right to be disagreeable."  I believe that thinking and reasoning are the path to reasonable judgment. This is based not only on thought, but emotions. Facts, feelings, and physical things influence our sensory judgments, and we draw conclusions. Time, age, and physical condition may also contribute to our beliefs.  In deed one may come to the very heart of the matter, and that is "How do we develop our belief system?" If I put on rose colored glasses, do I not see the world as red? This is not to say that belief systems are good or bad, just that it is the way we are.

America, the fragil empire

America, the fragile empire - latimes.com
For centuries, historians, political theorists, anthropologists and the public have tended to think about the political process in seasonal, cyclical terms. From Polybius to Paul Kennedy, from ancient Rome to imperial Britain, we discern a rhythm to history. Great powers, like great men, are born, rise, reign and then gradually wane. No matter whether civilizations decline culturally, economically or ecologically, their downfalls are protracted.

The naked Truth

The Naked Truth - Sprword.com - Spread the Word

This video exposes the ancient origins of modern religions, tracing them back to ancient Egypt and beyond. It tells about the sixteen other crucified saviors before Jesus, and how the Christian myth was created by plagiarizing the beliefs of many ancient civilizations. The story goes on to explain how many of these old religions were based on the ancient worship of the sun as "the light of the world" and the giver of life; how the sun "dies" for 3 days at the winter solstice as it ceases it's movement southward in the sky, and then is "reborn" on December 25th as it begins to move north again. The connection between religion and the zodiac is also explained, such as Christians (who worship the sun of God) worshipping on Sun-day, while Hebrews worship on Satur-day (from the ancient Semetic worship of Saturn.) These examples are just the tip of the iceberg and this video should be viewed by all living people, especially the devout believers in Biblical myths.
